GreenWorks is dedicated to helping the environment by diverting large quantities of redundant office and educational furniture from landfill with the prime aim of ‘re-use’. As part of the London Re-use Network which is made up of local charities and not for profit organizations that work together to deliver reuse and repair services, GreenWorks collects from very large office blocks to single office suites and provides second hand quality re-use furniture to charities, community and educational groups and small business via the network.

'Stable' unveiled at Ecobuild 2011

2 March 2011

At Ecobuild Exhibition 2011 a Royal College of Art student and Green-Works launched a new furniture design to reduce landfill waste.

Made from unwanted office desks, RCA student Gaurav Raut's table, the Stable, has won Green-Works' 2011 Sustainable Design Competition. In addition to the £1,000 prize 26 year old Gaurav has been awarded his own launch at Eco-Build and the chance to put the design into production. The judges were Oliver Heath, Lawrence Rivers from Steelcase and Green-Works' CEO Colin Crooks. Oliver Heath unveiled the new product in person at Ecobuild.

Colin Crooks explained the importance of re-using furniture in conserving resources: "A chipboard office desk with a veneer top uses more carbon in its production than the same weight of steel.  Chipboard is a material that is taken for granted but actually has fantastic technical qualities that make it ideal for this sort of product. Unfortunately, it is virtually impossible to recycle and thousands of tonnes of it are thrown into landfill every year. Re-purposing these sophisticated materials to create desirable new items is a very efficient way of saving resources."

Gaurav described his idea: "The concept behind the Stable is to create a family of remanufactured furniture products with a strong visual appeal.  I've sought to emphasise the true nature of the material and draw out the strengths of the high density chipboard which Green-Works is giving new life to. It is a fabulous material with genuine strength and flexibility and I wanted to show it off more.

"I also took inspiration from the chamfered look of the Green-Works logo. I wanted to create a unique aesthetic for the Stable that could lend its design attributes to a wider range of Green-Works products in future."

The Stable will form the newest addition to Green-Works' furniture range which is made entirely from re-manufactured materials from unwanted office furniture. Green-Works is a registered charity which employs disadvantaged people throughout its business. The Stable will help create jobs and training for disadvantaged people.

John Fleming from Green-Works said "its exciting to have a new product to sell at such a keen and competitive  price for the Stable Desk at just £149. When there is so much cheap furniture around that's light weight and has a short life span, it's good to reuse solid panels which saves on carbon, saves on waste and you can buy at a low price!
